Optimization Details
The Energy Management Portal uses intelligent optimization to minimize charging costs while meeting energy targets and respecting electrical constraints.
How Optimization Works
When a charging session starts with a Price Optimize intent, the system:
-
Collects inputs
- Electricity spot prices for the charging period
- Departure time and energy targets
- Current vehicle SoC (if available)
- Fuse limits and power constraints
-
Runs the optimizer
- Calculates the optimal charging schedule
- Balances cost minimization against delivery certainty
- Respects all electrical constraints
-
Executes the schedule
- Sends power setpoints to EVSEs
- Continuously monitors and adjusts
- Re-optimizes when conditions change
Charge Intent Types
Charge Now
Delivers energy as fast as possible within current and power constraints.
- No price optimization
- Charges at maximum available power
- Best for urgent charging needs
Price Optimize
Shifts charging to low-price periods while meeting targets.
Required inputs:
- Departure time - When the vehicle must be ready
- Target - Either SoC (%) or energy amount (kWh)
Optional inputs:
- Vehicle battery capacity - Enables accurate SoC calculations
- Current SoC - Starting point for optimization
Optimization Targets
Target SoC (%)
Charge until the vehicle reaches a specific state of charge.
- Requires known battery capacity
- System calculates required energy:
(target_soc - current_soc) × battery_capacity
Target kWh
Deliver a specific amount of energy.
- Does not require battery capacity
- Useful when SoC is unknown or unreliable
Combined Targets
You can set both targets. The system will:
- Deliver at least the target kWh
- Continue charging until target SoC is reached (if battery capacity is known)
Scheduled Overrides
Override the default intent for specific time windows.
Example use cases:
| Schedule | Intent | Reason |
|---|---|---|
| Mon-Fri 07:00-09:00 | Charge Now | Morning rush, vehicles must be ready |
| Sat-Sun all day | Price Optimize | Weekend flexibility |
| Daily 22:00-06:00 | Price Optimize | Overnight off-peak charging |
Load Management
The optimizer respects electrical constraints at every level of the node hierarchy.
Fuse Protection
Each node has a fuse limit (in Ampere). The system ensures:
- Total current through a node never exceeds its current limit
- Parent node limits are respected by all child nodes
- Safety margins are maintained
Power Distribution
When multiple EVSEs compete for limited capacity:
- Active sessions are prioritized by departure time
- Power is distributed to meet the most urgent targets first
- Remaining capacity is allocated based on optimization value
Re-Optimization
The system continuously monitors and re-optimizes when:
- Prices update - New spot prices become available
- Vehicle connects/disconnects - Available capacity changes
- SoC updates - Actual vehicle state differs from prediction
- Constraints change - Node limits or EVSE availability changes
Re-optimization ensures the schedule remains optimal as conditions evolve.
